This week was kind of low key

Which I needed.  So...not much to post.  This is good because Jordan reminded me that I have a post to write about him since I wrote that recent post about Kenzie and to keep things even, I'm writing it today.  You all will have to wait until Wednesday of this week to read it though.   I know, the suspense is killing you!  Ba, ha, ha, ha.  (That's my evil laugh in typing).

Here are a couple of pictures I forgot to post last weekend of the adventures the boys and Brad had at the wrestling tournament together.

This first was taken before weigh-ins on Friday.   Since the boys had to leave school early that day, Brad figured he'd have them skip the whole day and they'd enjoy some time spent together on their motorcycles in the desert.  It's always quite a sight to see when we have the fleet of dirtbikes out.

Funny thing about the dirtbiking, a lot of people laugh at Jordan when he tells them that riding his dirtbike is the most intensive workout he can get.  I remember even one friend telling him, "Ya, rolling back that throttle must be real difficult.  Well, before weigh-ins on Friday all the boys had weighed in a couple pounds over the night before and were struggling to make the weights I had signed them up for to wrestle at the tournament.  (Just FYI I didn't have them cut 10 lbs. or anything, they were only going 3-5 lbs. below their normal weights.)  After the dirt bike ride, each boy easily made their weight by 3-5 lbs.  So, I guess it is quite the workout.

While at the tournament there was a car show going on and their favorite car, a car modeled after the General Lee, was on display.

Yes, we are big Dukes of Hazard Fans.

This week was kind of crummy weather wise and I amazed even my husband when, determined, I got on my bike this Thursday morning in the gloom and mist leftover from the rain.  I'm a weather watcher though and I got in a decent ride in the end.  I even snapped a picture at my turn-around point just to prove i saw some blue skies.  Of course, it wasn't my fastest ride ever, but in weather like this it's just good to finish.

Other than that, not much to share.  Although Kenzie sent me a funny meme on my phone the other day when she was obviously feeling a little neglected due to my phone conversation with my sister.

It just made me feel good that she likes to be around me still.

Sunny days, spring awakenings, long weekend wrestling tournaments and late Easters

It has been beautiful this spring.  I love it every spring as the sun comes out because that means I get to take my bike out and see the beautiful country God has given us.  I took a selfie of myself getting ready for my bike ride earlier last week.  Yes, I wear bike speedos and gear...something I swore I never would do when I first moved here and saw all the bike riding junkies in their bike gear.  Go ahead, make fun of me.  I deserve it.

It looks like I got a haircut in this picture, but I didn't.  Just a funny angle with my hair all tucked up in my shirt.

With the warmth and the sunshine out come other critters that have been sleeping for the winter.  Yes, our local friendly bears have awoken recently.  The first trash can raid happened a few weeks ago.

Every year during winter we get lazy bear proofing our garbage and every spring we have these kind of messes to greet us.

Wrestling has officially ended for me this past weekend.  The weekend prior to this past weekend (Easter weekend) was the last peewee tournament for the year.  Thank Goodness!  However, this past weekend was a local national wrestling tournament that I enrolled all four boys in to wrestle.

Jordan and me waiting for the next bout.

Riley warming up before a match.

Early in the day I tried to catch a picture of what warms my heart about a tournament like this where all four are present.

It's not the best picture because I had to take it from so far away, but here Riley is in the hole for his first match of the day (standing right behind the score board with head gear on).  Jordan is standing to his left waiting to coach him and Ben to his right helping him warm-up.  These boys really take care of each other and I love the brotherhood bond that wrestling has created between them.  Wrestler of the day went to Ben who placed fourth in the folkstyle tournament on Saturday.  He lost his first match and had to rise up to the top through the consolation bracket.  This made it a long painful process but Ben hung in there.

His final match, for the third/fourth place, he lost by a mere three points.  It was his competitor's fourth match and Ben's seventh.  I was so proud of him and so proud of all my boys who supported him throughout the day.  A special nod to Jordan who coached every one of his last six matches.  His victory, while definitely coming from his hard work and commitment (The picture above is one Brad caught of him updating his wrestling journal.  A journal he has fastidiously kept for the past two years where he notes what he did right and what he did wrong every match.)was a victory for all and no jealousy was felt as we celebrated all the way home.  It's the first time anyone has placed at a tournament this large.

Today the oldest three boys returned to the tournament to wrestle freestyle and Greco.  Again, the boys wrestled well.  Jordan took fourth in freestyle in his division, beating the two wrestlers who took him out the day before.  Ben took 2nd in freestyle.  Finally, in Greco, Riley (I didn't sign him up for freestyle) took fifth, Jordan and Ben both took third.  Brad took a picture of the medals won.  Ben got three, Jordan one, but only had one on at the time of the picture.

Brad wanted us all to know that it's really him that's the champion so he took a selfie with all the medals on himself this evening.

Love these boys of mine.  And while I don't love the long days spent at tournaments, wrestling has really provided a good medium to teach my boys work ethic, persistence and responsibility.

Due to the long days spent at tournaments, Easter snuck up on me this year.  It snuck up on me so unexpectedly, I admitted failure as a Mom and decided not to decorate at all.  However, my ever so positive son, Jake, pulled out the Easter decorations to access the baskets and started decorating for me.  His determinedness (I think I just made up that word) to get the Easter decorations out broke my resolve to not decorate and I finally had everything up late Easter Eve.

I figure since I put them up so late and they are so cute I'll have to leave them out at least one more week.

I love Easter and celebrating the resurrection.  The hope that the atonement and resurrection offer us all is truly life motivating and changing.  Today I taught a lesson in Relief Society on coming to know the Savior.  The title of the talk the lesson was based on was "If ye had known me" and was given by Elder Bednar in the fall of 2016.  To end my blog I'm going to include my favorite quote from the lesson.

"Believing Him is trusting that His bounteous blessings are available and applicable in our individual lives and families. Believing Him with our whole soul38 comes as we press forward along the covenant pathway, surrender our will to His, and submit to His priorities and timing for us. Believing Him—accepting as true His power and promises—invites perspective, peace, and joy into our lives."

Writing this all down just made me feel so much better. Maybe you can relate, so I thought I'd share. No judging please.

When I wake up every morning I feel disoriented.  Reminding myself of some simple facts helps me clear my mind.  My name is Chelsey.  I am 42 years old.  I am married to Brad.  I live in the wonderful place I live in.  Today is Sunday the 9th of April 2017.  I have five children aged 16, 14, 13, 11 and 9.  Yes, today is going to be a good day.  At this point I get up feeling ready to conquer another day, despite the fact that 42 isn't as good as 40 was and I am scared to death for the future of my children.  Why fear?  Well, because for so long I could control their every move and now...I have no control and that is a hard thing for a loving parent to accept.  It is hard to accept that they have free agency.  It is even harder for me to let them have that free agency.  As I do slowly and surely let go, because life makes you, I wonder if I am doing it all right.  But, at this time of the morning, I've gone through my routine of stating who I am and what I am doing and I am calm, confident and starting the day.  It is April 9, 2017.

I love my family….fiercely love my family.  However, here are some truths.  It is difficult to be a mother of five.  At this current moment in time, I feel extreme dislike mixed with worry for all five of my children.  Really, extreme dislike.  This is how my day went:  I woke up this morning to the pleasant sound of my son, Riley, begging me to make biscuits and gravy.  No, I say.  I am on a diet.  I can’t eat biscuits and gravy and so I won’t make biscuits and gravy.  PLEASE he begs.  No, I say.  I am on a diet.   I can’t eat biscuits and gravy.  Will you make pancakes then?  No, because I am on a diet.  Jake has now joined us and pipes in, I will make pancakes.  No, because you won’t pick up your mess.  Yes, they chime together, we promise we will.  No.  You won’t pick up your mess.  Yes, we will!  Please let Jake make pancakes.  Fine, you can make pancakes but you must pick up your mess.  That is the condition of you making pancakes.  You have to pick up your mess.  Jake made pancakes and they all ate.  Then, after preparing a roast for after church, I look at the clock and it is 10:25.  None of my children are dressed for church yet and Kenzie isn’t even showered.  We leave (or at least attempt to leave) for church at 10:45.  Church starts at 11:00.  Kenzie runs upstairs to shower.  Jordan follows soon after.  I think he is going to get ready, but no, I am wrong.  Jordan went upstairs...to lay in my bed under a blanket.  Keep in mind, all of this time I am trying to get ready for church.  I am showered and that is all.  Jordan, I say, you must get out of my bed so you can be ready for church.  He responds, I have five more minutes to lie here Mom.  Then I’ll get ready.  No, I say, get out of my bed and go get ready for church.  I leave, blow dry my hair and come back.  Jordan is still lying in my bed.  I try to roll him out of his blanket to move him but he is too heavy for me now to physically move.  Jordan, my voice rises, get out of bed and get ready for church.  It is always you who makes us late for church and I don’t have the time to search for your church clothes(this is the truth he makes us late because he never knows where his church clothes are).  Get out of my bed!!!!  He lays there.  I leave to turn on the iron to iron my shirt.  On my way to the laundry room where the iron is kept, I encounter Riley and Jake fighting over a white Sunday shirt.  It is Mine! Jake yells as Riley has it half on his body.  That fight would be solved if they just didn’t wear the same size.  But no, Jake, 2 ½ years younger, has to be a giant and wear the same size as Riley.  Your shirt is right there, Riley says buttoning the last button.  That is not mine, Jake says.  The one you have is mine.  And on and on it goes with me pleading with Jake in between to please just wear the one on the floor.  They are both the same size anyway, both white and both long sleeved.  Please, wear the other shirt and stop fighting.  Finally, Jake gives in and I return to my bedroom shirt on and ironed.  Jordan is still lying there!  GET YOUR LAZY BUTT OUT OF MY BED!  I find myself irately screaming.  At this time he slowly lifts his teenage form off of my bed to go get ready.  He attempts to get in the bathroom that McKenzie is occupying.  It is locked because she is taking a shower.  He starts banging on her door to be let in because, even though we have three other bathrooms, all his stuff (toothbrush, razor, etc.) are in that bathroom and he needs them.  McKenzie is refusing and their two voices are rising.  Brad’s advice to Jordan is to go get a Phillips screw driver and take off the door handle which Jordan readily takes and begins to disassemble the door.  Brad says I better fix the fight or he will and at this point I’ve had it!  I am now not wanting to go to church myself but something in my traditional personality forces me to continue curling my hair so that I can be presentable when we go.  At the same time, tears are streaming down my face because if my children ever did want to go to church initially they probably don’t now that I have screamed at Jordan at the top of my lungs and with all the fighting amongst themselves, I am obviously the worst parent ever.  *Sigh* and hence, a worry that continually haunts me that none of my children will ever hold religion dear to them (because so many in our country have forsaken religion) returns.  I then imagine divorces and unhappy families because I strongly believe that faith in Christ makes things...not perfect, but better.

We finally make it to church (I don’t know how that miracle happens) twenty minutes late.  Yes, twenty.  The bishop has texted Jordan to ask him where he is which I see because it is no technology Sunday for him and I have his phone.  The priest quorum advisor sees Jordan in the hall and asks him if he has his lesson prepared for priests to which Jordan responds, what lesson?  His teacher responds the lesson you were assigned.  The lesson you would know about if you attended our planning meeting today.  Which response arises a very human “mother bear” defense of my son, perhaps because I feel that possibly I have ruined any desire for him to want to attend church with my pushiness.  I just can't bear one more harassment for not attending a meeting, or setting up a volleyball net .  I do not want him to feel guilty when he can’t set up the volleyball net for a young men’s activity because he is spending time with his Dad and brother dirtbiking together.  So, of course, I tell his priest quorum advisor that everyone needs to lay off Jordan a little bit about his “duties” and appreciate that he is here, thinking in my head they should really just appreciate that I am here because I almost didn’t come today.  Brad says I am a little harsh with the priests advisor.  To which I respond, I wasn’t harsh, I like him…if he tells the other leaders it will be better coming from him, not me.  While this conversation is going on Jake is pulling leaves off of the fake tree and Jordan is sitting on him and they are being extremely loud.  Jake then moves and sits on the floor.  Get up off the floor I tell him and he doesn’t.  So, instead I lift him by his shirt collar (because I can still move him physically because he is 9) and make him stand.  As I am lifting him he fakes a loud choking sound (he is a very talented actor) which arouses some suspicious glances my way and so I let him go.  He then leaves my side and starts turning on and off the hall lights in the church.  When he started doing that those who gave me the suspicious glances probably wished I had him in the choke hold by his collar again.  I then chased Jake outside to sit and told him to remain there until he could come in and worship properly.  When I step back inside, I find Jordan and Ben wrestling in the foyer and they too, are promptly excused from the church.  Ben, because he was the loudest, was sent out to sit in the truck.  I have to have a long conversation with Ben about the importance of worship and what that means.  I feel like crying all over again.

We get through the last two hours of church relatively easy (ha, ha that's probably because they were not with me in class).  Upon arriving home, however, I am upstairs in my room and Jordan and McKenzie decide they want their cell phones back.  Knowing that is no technology Sunday and this is not allowed, they grab their phones and text a few people making me pry the wretched devices out of their grips.  Exhausted after winning that battle, I place both phones on my dresser and walk away.  McKenzie sneakily grabs her phone again.  She wasn't sneaky enough to fool Jordan though.  I soon hear, MOM! McKenzie has her phone in the bathroom.  I immediately walk into the bathroom interrupting whatever privacy she had and ask her to hand over the phone politely.  I don't have it.  McKenzie, I know you have it.  I don't have it.  You do.  And then, amazingly, she is able to "find" the phone on her person and hands it over.  I locked both phones in the safe.  I come downstairs and guess what hasn't been picked up?  Yes, you are right, the pancake mess.  Add to that the lunch mess that everyone made after we returned from church and the kitchen is quite the disaster.  I ask McKenzie to pick it up but she has logged on to the computer to watch something funny she is unable to watch on her phone and appears to be ignoring me.  Really, please clean I say.  She slumps in a corner.  Reading her mood, I say, okay don't clean, but how about you go outside to get some sunshine.  Sunshine will be good for you.  She slumps further.  So, determined to get her outside, but trying to figure out a way to do it other than literally kicking her out the door, I grab her enormously large t-shirt that she has on and drag her inch by inch to the doorstep.  All the while she is laughing finding this hilariously funny.  In the end, she ended up outside and I ended up exhausted from the effort to get her there.  I locked the door quickly just to assure she stayed there after all my effort.  Unfortunately, I didn't get to the other doors quick enough and soon she found a way back in through the garage.

And so yes, today started calmly.  I am Chelsey.  I am 42.  I am married to Brad.  I live in __________.  It is April 9, 2017.  I have five children ages 16, 14, 13, 11 and 9.  Now, I am aggravated, not enjoying this feeling of dislike.  Although, as I have written this all down, the dislike has disseminated to doubt, doubt that I am doing this parenting thing right.  This doubt and insecurity remind me of just how much I love these stinkers.  And yes, stinkers they are.  Parenting is hard.  Maybe tomorrow will be better.  I've got to go clean the pancake mess.

Spring Break

This last week was our school's spring break.  Since I didn't get to use my plane tickets to Seattle in August, this is the week I got to use them.  Jake, Kenzie and I are the ones who got to go since those were the original ticket holders.  We headed to Seattle Saturday morning.  Once at the airport, I discovered that the airline had changed my flight time.  This was unfortunate because we had traveled 3 1/2 hours to get to the airport.  Yes, the flights out of my town are expensive and when we fly more than two it definitely saves money(and time for that matter because there are always holdovers for a flight out of our home town, no direct flights) to drive a little.  Upon finding this out, I wanted to cry.  When I called the airline, they blamed it on my booking company and when I called my booking company they blamed it on the airline.  Lucky for me, in the end the two worked it out and got me a flight out first thing the next morning.  Unlucky for me I had to sit next to the bathrooms the whole trip....  Lucky for me I was able to find a cheap hotel close to the airport, unlucky for me they didn't serve breakfast and I ended up in a scary neighborhood trying to find something to buy for us to eat.  When we got to the grocery store the conversation between McKenzie and I literally went like this:

McKenzie:  Uh, mom are you sure we should leave our car out here?  Someone might rob us.
Me (trying to sound confident):  We'll be fine.  We'll be in and out in a hurry.

I decided to only buy a bunch of bananas and take off quickly.  Lucky for me, we had almond butter to go with our banana breakfast.  Unlucky for me they wouldn't let me bring it on the plane.

Okay, I'm done with the lucky/unlucky theme.  You can all breathe a sigh of relief.

Jacob was so worried about missing the morning flight he barely slept and practically sprinted out of the hotel and into the airport.  I kept reassuring him that we would make it this time.  That our missed flight was due to a miscommunication the day prior.

Behind us we left a nice sunny day:

and landed in the Seattle mist and fog that haunts the local residents this time of year.

That is something that I had forgotten when I booked the trip.  Seattle in March is rainy.  It's been a long time since I've been to Seattle any other time than the summer.  Noted to self, don't go in the spring again.

My sister Missy picked us up and we spent the first few days with her and her family.  On one of our outings out, McKenzie snapped a picture of one of the many Seattle skylines, awed by the number of buildings dotting the horizon.  Again, not something we see here really.

The last half of our week was spent with my Mom and Dad in beautiful Anacortes, and while, yes, the weather was rainy, we found some brief respites from the weather and managed to get outside a little.  We went to the local zipline park:

After messing around for a little while there, we headed to Washington Park, Grandma's favorite place to take pictures.  While we tried to take pictures of both Jake and Kenzie, Kenzie was much more willing to pose so that she could capture the perfect picture to post on instagram.

Uh, the moss is supposed to be a mustache.  Kenzie found that incredibly funny.

The most sunny day of the week, we actually planned to go shopping, but perhaps that should have been spent outside.  On the drive home we got to see one of the beautiful daffodil fields that are so prevalent this time of year.

The Anacortes area is actually famous for their tulip fields this time of year, but due to the amount of moisture they had this winter, the fields are a little behind schedule.

It was a good visit and nice to get away from home.

Brad and the older three boys stayed home.  They skied, dirtbiked, worked and wrestled.

Ben had middle school regionals and middle school state.  He placed fourth at regionals and in the top 29 at state.  The middle school state competition here is all schools, no divisions so to place in the top 29 is good.

Yesterday I took both Riley and Jake to another peewee tournament.  Both placed third.  Two more weekends to go and then they are finished for the season!  I can't tell you how excited I am about that.  I HATE peewees.

Last, but not least, wanted to post a little trinket that Jordan made in welding at school.

Pretty cool, no?
